Givans VS. Givens & My Latest Quilt Finish + –FABRIC GIVEAWAY–

You know me.  I’m Heather Givans, spelled with an A. I’m not here to confuse anyone or create a big old kerfuffle but I wanted to draw your attention to Tina Givens, spelled with an E.  Givans with an A (me) and Givens with an E (Tina).  We are both fabric designers.  We are both pattern writers.  But Tina with an E just recently completed her latest collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics called Piecemeal.  Vibrant, citrusy, and chock-full of stunning color, the 24 piece collection is fun and I LOVE IT!!! So when I had the opportunity to work with her latest fabric collection, I jumped at the chance.  Just so you know, my next collection of fabric isn’t announced until January.  So for now, let’s focus in on Tina with an E’s fabric and my newest quilt creation.

Bracelet Making Quilt 83″ x 83″

Tina with an E describes her colleciton as being inspired “…by change in my family life, and how we can piecemeal the happy parts of our lives back together. Crazy life.”

When a design is created with hope in mind, I can’t help be drawn in.  I paired 15 Piecemeal fabrics with my chosen 16 coordinating FreeSpirit solids and bam.  This is what happened.

IMG_8238.jpg

Inspired by friendship bracelet making, because you know that I’m a former camp counselor, adventure trip leader, and outdoor educator, right?  Yes, me.  Heather Givans with an A! My camp name was Heliotrope.  No kid ever knew what what a heliotrope was, but I chose it because it seemed to suit me more than names like Hay or Honey.  We chose our camp names based on the first letter of our first names.  I spent countless hours of my life at camp with a safety pin fastened to my knee knotting and knotting lengths of embroidery floss to make the perfect summer camp accessories.  Don’t worry.  I’ve got a lot of stories to tell about this time in my life later.

IMG_8603 2.jpg

This scrappy quilt design has been rattling around in my head since my friend Lindsay taught a string quilt class at Crimson Tate nearly five years ago.  Combining the improvisation and scrappiness of string quilt block making with a little touch of organization, the Bracelet Making Quilt came to life.

IMG_9717

Big thank you to Dan Clayton of Quilting by the Stitch for his expert quilting!

This quilt began by foundation piecing strips to a page of our newly delivered telephone book.  It looked like a hot mess, as seen here.  I created four messes that looked relatively the same and squared those blocks to a common measurement.

IMG_8301.jpg

I didn’t worry if pieces were the same size, or if they were cut and sewn straight.  I just sewed.  Larger blocks started to form as I made four relatively “same” sequenced blocks, which became the centers.

IMG_8287.jpg

Eight more blocks, sewn in reverse order, surround the original four to make the greater, larger block.  I added half a square of solid so that the plus sign shape could emerge by contrasting against the background.   Take a look at how it morphed and formed.

Up on the design wall it went and pow.  The quilt layout was made.  If you’re interested in a tutorial on how to put this together, I’d encourage you to join our eNewsletter.  I’ll send out an alert when it’s ready.  You might also get some news on what’s happening at Crimson Tate along the way, too.  (Be cautioned, we don’t send many emails!  I promise not to flood your inbox and I most definitely won’t share your email address with anyone else.)

Utilizing my leftover scraps, I made something fun on the back along with some double gauze.  SO. STINKING. SOFT.

IMG_9726

IMG_9723

I love remembering and dreaming about my days as a camp counselor hiking, swimming, canoeing, basket weaving (for real), and bracelet making.  I love that this quilt serves as a marker for an important time in my life.

Want to win some Piecemeal of your own?  Wanna win a coordinating bundle of FreeSpirit Solids? We’ve got six one yard pieces provided by the kind folks at FreeSpirit to give away and Crimson Tate is giving away the solids bundle!!  You’ve got three ways to win!! Do all three, get three chances!!  Winner will be drawn Monday, November 27, 2017.

  1. Leave a comment here and tell me about your experience level in friendship bracelet making.  Novice, intermediate, expert?  I’d love to know about your favorite flosses, patterns, and colors to create.  If you’re a stranger to friendship bracelets, tell me about your most important friendship and how you signify it. (I mean, if it’s not in the form of friendship bracelets, what form does it come in? Matching hats, friendship tattoos, etc.???)
  2. Share this blog post on your facebook page (as a public post) and tag Crimson Tate :: Modern Quilter and FreeSpirit Fabrics in the post!  We’ll only be able to see it if you make the post public.  If you’re so inclined, be sure to give us a LIKE, too.
  3. Take this game to Instagram!  Post the photo below and tag @crimsontate @sewtinagivens @freespiritfabric #BraceletMakingQuilt and tell me who you think spells their name correctly.  Is it Tina Givens or is it Heather Givans?  Total pretend bonus for choosing me. 😉  Of course, we’d love it if you’d follow Crimson Tate there, too, if it’s in your heart.

Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

CorrespondenceQuilt_front.jpg

In just nine fat quarters, you’ll have the CUTEST little project to give to your paper loving quilty friend (and leftover fabrics to play with for yourself).

CorrespondenceQuilt-v3-EXTERIOR

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

Crimson Tate

Photo Eric Lubrick

My booth looked like this:

IMG_0008

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

IMG_1976

I will not fail in returning correspondence to you.  You took the time to write, I’ll get this done.  Promise.  And for everyone who wrote to me, I have included a sweeeeeet surprise in the envelope.

I have a new collection of fabric for Windham Fabrics that will be presented at the International Quilt Market in Houston, TX in late October.  Soon, I’ll announce an all call for help with that collection, too.  If you want to be notified of what we’re up to and what I need to create my booth, sign up for Crimson Tate’s electronic newsletter here.

I’m super jazzed that in Paper Obsessed I could combine my love of fabric and quilting with my love of doodling, mail, and embroidery.

Here’s a little photo essay of building the Correspondence Mini Quilt:

I’ve had so much fun embroidering with the Aurifloss by Aurifil Threads.  Some of you already have this kit and pattern because you purchased it through QuiltyBox where I was the guest artist for the month of June.  Wahooo!!!  I can’t wait to see your creations!

Be sure to check out all the Crimson Tate patterns available.

Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Sunday Edition with Karen McTavish !!!!

karenMcTIt’s easy like Sunday Morning.  Although, what Karen McTavish does isn’t easy.  Today’s Paper Obsessed blog is happening right here with the talented, energetic, lovely, and real Karen McTavish.  She quilted my improv Air Traffic Control Quilt that I fondly refer to as Aerodynamics.

Paper Air Plane Without Girls Flattened.jpgHere’s what Karen has to say:

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.

Final Stop on the Succulents Blog Hop and TOTAL GRATITUDE

Photo Apr 02, 9 51 01 AM

View from inside my house. Woodruff Place Victorian neighborhood. Note the sand colors.

We did it.  We traversed across the blog-a-sphere and peeked in on a slug of creative friends who have put Succulents to good use.  I’m totally honored and proud of the company I keep, my friends and creative colleagues.  I wanted to cap off the tour with a little story of where the ideas came from plus a few more thank yous.

Photo Mar 25, 7 48 28 AM

The Beginnings of Caring for Succulents

The design process for me starts with pencil on paper.  And then again, more pencil on paper, from doodles to realism. I like to explore the range and often land somewhere in the fringe with elements of realism but mostly a whimsy style.  Through this process for Succulents, my first collection for Windham Fabrics, I wanted desperately to hangout in greenhouses and nurseries among the warm air that the cacti breathe.  As a mid-westerner, cold winter months draw me to those places of tropical relief.  And to think it’s only a short trip across town to smell the earthy dirt and moist air, I’ll take it.  If I’m going to be totally honest and reveal my absolute nerdiness (which I’m totally ok with) you should know that I’ve been a member of the Cacti and Succulent Society of America for the past 15 years.  I subscribe to the technical journal and read it religiously.  It’s always a great day when the journal shows up in my mailbox.  I dream of traveling to South Africa to witness some of my favorite plants in the wild.

In my not so distant past I had a huge collection – over a hundred varieties – of various succulents and cacti.  One of my favorite things is when people bring me cuttings of their heirloom plants.  I am thoroughly convinced that plants that are gifts grow much better than plants you buy for yourself.  It’s easy to share many kinds of succulents because the less finicky varieties just regenerate in new dirt.

Flux‘s beautiful green typewriter

They don’t mind, either, if you neglect them.  In the winter months when they are sitting in all of my south facing window sills, I ignore them until they cry out, playing Mr. Obvious that they need a drink!  Being inspired by their funky leaves, sometime fat and transparent, is easily done.  Often succulents are totally CUTE, too, so that doesn’t hurt.

In this collection I wanted to pull together a slug of different greens that are sometimes difficult to coordinate.  So to add olive green to spring green to sage green, how can we make that work?! Lovely and luckily enough, those tones live together very harmoniously in the succulent world.  I love that the overall collection edges a little bit dusty and earthy.  I like to think that’s who I am.  If you add dashes of antiques and worn goods, it’s the spice of who I am.
It has been such a pleasure and immense joy to work with the gang of Windham Fabrics.  Let’s do it again! And in fact, I’ve turned in some designs for the second collection, so hold your hats.  We’re gonna take this ride again.
In the next few days, I’ll feature a tutorial on how to sew this quilt.  Subscribe, follow, pinch, poke, you owe me a coke, or whatever you do to remind yourself that you should come back here in a few days to see how to build this modern quilt I call Scandia.
