Help support the efforts of IU Health Comfort Quilts.

I’d like to invite you to support the efforts of local IU Health Comfort Care Quilt group, spearheaded by Crimson Tate customer and friend, trauma surgeon Dr. Ashely Meagher.  The group creates quilts for trauma patients who are at the end of their treatment and are receiving only palliative care.  What this means is that their conditions are terminal and nothing more can be done.  This is where Ashley’s love and compassion for her patients, and her passion for quilting kicks in.  She has created a network of quilters who make quilts for these patients to use in their final days.  What a beautiful, tangible way to express care and love for local families who are faced with sobering realities.  Those quilts will be passed on to the families of the patients.   Ashley from the beginning has made a conscience effort to create a partnership with Crimson Tate for which I am incredibly grateful and hope that you, too. She has made a commitment to procure and source as much as she can from local, independently owned fabric stores.

How can you help?! Can you create a small lap quilt for her cause?

There are a number of ways you can help:

1) Make a quilt – ~40″ x 50-60″  which will fit on a hospital bed.  Please, no religious, holiday, or children’s themes

2) Make a quilt top – these will be used during  quilting parties to make “sandwich and tie quilts”

3) Donate fabric, batting, thread, notionsIf you’ve got the time, you’ve got some stash, I’d love to invite you to create a Comfort Quilt for the patients of the trauma unit at IU Health.

Quilts approximately 40″ x 50-60″ are needed!

Don’t have time to quilt?! Wanna give supplies needed? For every batting you purchase specifically for Comfort Care Quilts, Crimson Tate will match your purchase. You purchase one batting we donate one batting. You purchase 12 battings for Comfort Care Quilts, Crimson Tate will donate 12 battings yielding 24 battings for their important cause.

This is a big old hug to Indiana Comfort Quilting group who is making quilts for IU Health Trauma for local patients who are in palliative care.  Sweet bippy.  You are a goodie.  Thank you for donating batting to the group!  Crimson Tate is honored to help support our local friends doing good deeds.

For every package of batting that you purchase for Indiana Comfort Quilts, Crimson Tate will match your donation.  You buy one, we buy one.  And added to the fun, you will be entered into a fun lil’ drawing we are doing at Crimson Tate at the end of the day on Small Business Saturday.  We’re gonna give you five tickets to be entered into the pool of two grand prizes.

Bless your lil’ heart and thank you for using your talents and resources for good.  We love you!!

Please note this product will be given to the Indiana Comfort Quilting group and nothing will be sent via mail to you.  You will only receive good wishes and big big thank yous and all kinds of love from us to you.  Let us know if you have questions. Purchase your donation batting here. We’re gonna give you 5 tickets automatically for being so awesome.

Dear Crimson Tate,

I’ve been considering becoming a VIP.  If I become a VIP, can I get tickets for that?  Also, I was thinking about buying myself a gift certificate and then I want to use that gift certificate to buy my VIP membership.  Will I get tickets for the purchase of the gift certificate and then also when I use the gift certificate to get my awesome VIP tote bag and pin as a charter member?  Sincerely, Double Dipper

Dear Dipper,

You are so cute.  Here’s the deal, D.  Every gift card purchase made on Small Business Saturday will be awarded tickets!  Yayayyyyy.  However, if you redeem that gift card during this time period, you won’t get double tickets.  That just makes more admin work for us and we’re not so into that.  If you’ve got a gift card you bought yourself before the game begins, it will be eligible for tickets.  We’ll give you tickets for all your purchases, just not doublely.  Bless your little heart.

Dear Crimson Tate,

Girl! I’m VIP.  Are there any VIP perks for me?!  And do I still accrue points during this time period? You know I love you and I love being at Crimson Tate.  Lemme know, ok? Sincerely, VIP Charter Member

Dear VIP,

YES! You still get points! Just by your beautiful nature of already pledging your love of Ms. Alizarin Crimson Tate (you know that her first name is really Alizarin, right?) as a VIP member, we’re going to enter you into the large drawing.  We threw an artisanal handwritten ticket into the barrel of possibilities with your name on it.  Bam.  You’re important to us.  Don’t you forget it. We love you.  Being VIP is awesome!

Dear Crimson Tate,

I want to contribute to IU Health Comfort Quilts how do I do that?! Sincerely, The Giver

Dear Giver,

Awwwww.  Thank you.  Definitely feel free to mail us your finished quilt.  We will pass it along to the folks at Comfort Quilts.  If you aren’t able to create a quilt, we will have more opportunities to help.  Don’t fret.  We can put your kindness to work and we thank you for being willing.

Wrap Those Prezzies in Fabric

It’s that time of year but then again to deck the halls and whatnot. Good news is that present giving is a year round job! Enjoy this quick and easy tutorial on how to sew your own fabric wrapping paper errrrrr fabric wrapping fabric. LOLLZZZ. Reusable again and again! Obviously, you can make these wraps in any size you’d like. I say start with this general size that will easily wrap 20 yards of fabric. (I wrapped Anna Maria Horner’s Made My Day 1-yard bundle in that bottom wrap.)

Step 1: Choose your fabric

I chose Dylan Mierzwinski or you might know her as Dylan M. She’s a Windham Fabrics designer and this is her latest collection called Fancy. The florals and gems seem perfect for gift giving. Her drawings feel like the type of wallpaper I’d like to have in my home.

Step 2: Cut your fabric

Cut (1) 29″ x 38″

Cut (1) 2″ x 40″

Cut (1) 2″ x 20″

Step 3: Hem that big rectangle

Begin by folding a short edge 1/2″ inch, wrong sides together. Hit it with the iron and then move along to long edge. Repeat on all four sides. To reduce bulk, at this stage I clipped the corners at 450 so that I could miter the corners more easily. You don’t have to get fancy. This is a low stress project. I use oodles of steam when hemming. It just makes it go wayyyyyy faster. Next, fold again 1/2″ making an aggressive press all the way around.

Sew around the the entire folded edge, making sure to pin as you go, pay a little attention the corners. Maybe try to make it neat.

Step 4: Time to make the ties

The illustration below will help understand how to make double fold tape.

  1. Start by folding the raw edges to the center of the fabric and press the Dickens out of it. Don’t hold back on that steam.
  2. Next fold the tie in half and hit it with the iron again. The first ties I made I didn’t use a bias tape maker or the old fashioned needle attached to your ironing board method (I’ve made my fair share of plastic bag holders). But if you’re gonna make a lot of these, I would recommend investing in a bias tape maker/folder. It’s relatively inexpensive and you don’t have to cut your fabric on the bias to use it. I used it when I started my third wrap and was super glad that I did.
  3. After all of your ironing is complete, sew along the open edge.

Once sewn, you’ll need to cut the shorter tie in half, creating (2) ties measuring 1/2″ x 10″. It’s easier to work with a long tie than it is to work with short ones when ironing and sewing. I tried to save my fingers from melting under the iron by cutting it in half after ironing / sewing is done.

Step 5: Attach the short ties to the short sides

Let’s find the center of the short side. I did this by folding my fabric in half and finger pressing where the middle was. I carefully seam ripped a little bigger than 1/2″ of my hem at that spot and inserted the raw edge of my tie. Repeat on the other short edge.

Be sure to PIN it in place and then hit it with the sewing machine, securing the tie under the hem. Here’s a real photograph to make this process a lil’ easier. Be sure to backstitch on both sides.

Now it’s time to flip out! And by flip out I mean flip the ties out and sew them down again. Check out the illustrations. Be sure to super secure the tie by backstitching at the beginning and end.

Step 6: Attach the long tie to the center

This whole time we’ve been looking at the back of our project. Now it’s time to flip it over to the right side, the super pretty side. You’ll first need to find the center of your fabric. I did this by folding in half both on the short edge and the long edge.

Once you’ve found the center, it’s time to pin the center of the long tie to the center of the hemmed fabric. It’s gonna look a little like this.

Sew 5″ of the tie to the center of the fabric. Again, backstitch. Don’t sew the entire tie top to bottom; only sew a 5″ rectangle in the center of your tie and fabric. Leaving the tie unattached will allow you to wrap various sizes of objects more easily. Here’s a look at how I pinned the tie to the center and marked with pins where I was to begin and end my sewing. Notice the ruler and that I’ve marked only 5″ of the middle and will sew on both sides of the tie.

Step 7: Trim all those loose threads

When I first learned to quilt, my teacher said to me “The difference between an amateur and a professional are the number of loose threads.” So here you have it! Pretty wraps for present giving and you’re professional.

Here are a list of supplies and links to Crimson Tate’s website where I source my goods.

FABRIC – Dylan M. (you need a yard) Any fabric will work, including Echino cotton linens, lawn, etc.

Iron – I used the Oliso Pro. I love love love that iron!

Magic Pins – easy to grip and don’t melt under your iron.

Aurifil Thread – sometimes you might want to match the fabric, sometimes you might see it as an opportunity to do something with higher contrast. I recommend 40wt thread since it’s gonna be seen and it’ll be super pretty.

1″ Bias Tape Maker – again, remember you don’t have to cut bias fabric to use this.

Happy Holidays, friends!

VIP_LOGO

We are super excited to announce Crimson Tate’s online VIP TO GO program!  Many of you have been anxiously awaiting this moment and finally, it’s here!

How does Crimson Tate VIP TO GO work?

With your $35 membership to our annual VIP club, you’ll receive the following perks.  First and foremost, with your first purchase, we will reward you with the coveted Crimson Tate tote bag, sure to create feelings of joy in your neighborhood.  I mean, you need to let the world know you’re important to us.  Let that big old purple bag SHINE!

Screen Shot 2017-10-05 at 5.24.40 PM

You will also receive 2018’s enamel pin, exclusive to VIP members.

We will send you extras in your online orders from time to time.  From a cute inspirational pencil to exclusive stickers, or extra fabric JUST BECAUSE!

What to expect?

Each month, you’ll receive a coupon for www.crimsontate.com that is exclusive to CT VIP members.  It may be links to secret products on our website, it may be the opportunity to be the FIRST to purchase a particular fabric or pattern.  Some coupons will include discounts for specific products or genres of products.  For example, one month may include a coupon code for 25% off all bundles.  (insider information: 25% off bundles is a real coupon coming at you when you sign up).

But guys, it’s already JULY.  Should I really sign-up now?

With the inaugural membership, you’ll receive six coupons that can be used through the end of September, at your leisure.  So the next time you need a bundle, you can dig that coupon out of your email and use it at crimsontate.com.  You’ll receive at least one coupon monthly from July – December.  Membership expires December 31, 2018.

What if you run out of the product that is named as a special?

That would be such a bummer!  We will make every effort to recreate the product that is on sale, but realistically speaking, most coupons that are for quantity limited products will be while supplies last.  You are VIP so we’ll come up with a way to make it up to you but you may want to move fast if your heart is all a flutter for a specifically special deal.

Cool!  My guild is going to split a VIP TO GO membership so that we can all share the perks.  Is that ok?

Please do not share with your buddies or family or sewing guilds, groups, or ANYONE.  We are a small operation and this is the most time efficient way we can offer specials to our favorite online customers (YOU!).  If a code is used by someone who has not purchased a Crimson Tate TO GO membership, their order will be terminated.  Booooo.  We don’t want to be jerks about this, but it isn’t within our ability to offer these deals internet wide.  They are special and only for you!  So when using the coupon code, it should reflect the VIP purchaser email address, street address, and name.  It cannot be shipped elsewhere.  Thanks for sticking to this.  We want this to be fun not legalistic.

I-heart-CRIMSON-TATE

Hold the phone!  I’m already a VIP.  Do I get to play this VIP TO GO game?

Friend!  You betcha!  Here’s the deal, however, VIP TO GO coupons can only be used online at crimsontate.com.  We cannot accept the coupons over the phone or in the store.  You can shop at crimsontate.com and choose in-store pick up; that is perfectly acceptable.  And to all of the ONLINE VIP members, you can also take advantage of in-store only deals when you travel to Crimson Tate and shop in the store.  Yayyyyy.  Fun fun fun.

Row by Row 2018 {Cottage Home Rondo} – Crimson Tate’s Row!

Yaayyyyy!!! Row by Row season is upon us!  It’s time to get to rowing, kids.  Let me introduce you to Crimson Tate’s 2018 row, Cottage Home Rondo.

I’m so lucky to be surrounded by musical talent here at Crimson Tate.  David, right-handed right hand man, is graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.  Our own Amy Wallarab, Crimson Tate’s cat whisperer, IS TOO!!! She actually has a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from the University of Memphis and a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from IU Jacobs School of Music.  Ohhhhhh the talent that surrounds me!!  So when I found out that this year’s theme is MUSIC, I was like YESSSSSS!!!

Our row, Cottage Home Rondo, is inspired by a little jazz ditty Amy wrote.

Screen Shot 2018-06-20 at 5.26.31 PMThe piece of music is a spirited, upbeat jingle that is just plain happy.  It is the punctuation of these notes that inspired our row. Screen Shot 2018-05-30 at 1.25.12 PM.png

Transition and blend of color corresponds with the measures of this music. The pattern of the half square triangles are translated from the jazz composition, representing the sequences of the music visually. We’re getting geeky about the quilty musicality of this one! It’s a delightfully abstract row that involves our beautiful Liberty of London fabrics as well as an exclusive fabric of Amy’s musical composition.  How fantastic!!  We use FreeSpirit solids around here, too, in case you’re wondering.

img_0409Want a color copy of our pattern and kit?  Get on in here!  We’re located Downtown Indianapolis along the Cultural Trail on Mass Ave.  The Row By Row Experience starts June 21!  Want to reserve your kit online before you make the trek in? Head to our website and pre-order your goods.  We’ll have them waiting for you at the register.

Don’t think you’ll make it to Indiana anytime soon but are smitten?  Pre-order your Row by Row kit NOW!  We’ll ship your kit on November 1, 2018.  Ta-dahhhh!  Please kindly place a separate order for items that are available now.  We will need to keep pre-orders separate from inventory currently available.  Thanks for that!

We can’t wait to see you this summer whether it be online or in-store.  Loads of fun and inspiration are happening around here.  Big thank you to Amy Wallarab who took her creative energies to write a special piece of music JUST FOR THIS occasion.  #talented #inawe #majorlythankful

Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Crimson Tate,

I live in the far far reaches of the world and won’t be able to make it to Crimson Tate on Small Business Saturday.  Is there anyway I can participate by purchasing items online to be entered to win?  How’s that gonna work?  Sincerely, Lover from the Far Reaches

Dear Precious Lil’ Lover from Yonder Town,

Don’t fear!  We’ve got you.  On Small Business Saturday we’re going to enter you into the hourly drawings!  That’s right.  For every $25 you spend we’ll generate tickets for you and add you to the drawing.  Wooooot!  And starting now until end of day on Saturday (6:00 PM EST) we’ll add you to the larger drawing, too.  So go for it!!

Dear Tate de Crimson,

I’m an international customer.  Am I eligible to win the sewing machine or hourly tote bag giveaways?  I’m tres excited to know.  Sincerely, La International Customer

Dear International Friend,

Yessss!!! Part of the reason we switched our online game was so that we could offer international shipping!!! We hope you’ll be our customer, too!  We’d love to enter you into the hourly drawings.  As far as the sewing machine goes, we’re going to offer you a gift certificate for the store. We don’t want you to have to worry about finding a voltage converter.  That sounds horrible.  Best of luck!

Dear Crimson Tate,

I am a mega mega fan!  How many times can I shop at your store and be eligible to win? I’m so excited to play and I’m super competitive.  Sincerely, I NEED TO WIN

Dear Needy,

Seriously! Get in here.  Get on crimsontate.com – you can shop everyday multiple times a day.  All of your purchases will be eligible for our many giveaways!  And thank you for being a mega fan.  We’re so honored.

Every gift card purchase made now through Small Business Saturday will be awarded tickets!  Yayayyyyy.  However, if you redeem that gift card during this time period, you won’t get double tickets.  That just makes more admin work for us and we’re not so into that.  If you’ve got a gift card you bought yourself before the game begins, it will be eligible for tickets.  And about that VIP, DO IT!!! There are only a few charter member VIP spots still available.  We’ll give you tickets for that purchase, too.  Bless your little heart.

Dear Crimson Tate,

Girl! I’m already VIP.

Alizarin Crimson Tate (you know that her first name is really Alizarin, right?) as a VIP member, we’re going to enter you into the EverSewn sewing machine drawing.  We threw an artisanal handwritten ticket into the barrel of possibilities with your name on it.  Bam.  You’re important to us.  Don’t you forget it. We love you.  Being VIP is awesome!

Givans VS. Givens & My Latest Quilt Finish + –FABRIC GIVEAWAY–

You know me.  I’m Heather Givans, spelled with an A. I’m not here to confuse anyone or create a big old kerfuffle but I wanted to draw your attention to Tina Givens, spelled with an E.  Givans with an A (me) and Givens with an E (Tina).  We are both fabric designers.  We are both pattern writers.  But Tina with an E just recently completed her latest collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics called Piecemeal.  Vibrant, citrusy, and chock-full of stunning color, the 24 piece collection is fun and I LOVE IT!!! So when I had the opportunity to work with her latest fabric collection, I jumped at the chance.  Just so you know, my next collection of fabric isn’t announced until January.  So for now, let’s focus in on Tina with an E’s fabric and my newest quilt creation.

IMG_9715R.jpg

Bracelet Making Quilt 83″ x 83″

Tina with an E describes her colleciton as being inspired “…by change in my family life, and how we can piecemeal the happy parts of our lives back together. Crazy life.”

When a design is created with hope in mind, I can’t help be drawn in.  I paired 15 Piecemeal fabrics with my chosen 16 coordinating FreeSpirit solids and bam.  This is what happened.

IMG_8238.jpg

Inspired by friendship bracelet making, because you know that I’m a former camp counselor, adventure trip leader, and outdoor educator, right?  Yes, me.  Heather Givans with an A! My camp name was Heliotrope.  No kid ever knew what what a heliotrope was, but I chose it because it seemed to suit me more than names like Hay or Honey.  We chose our camp names based on the first letter of our first names.  I spent countless hours of my life at camp with a safety pin fastened to my knee knotting and knotting lengths of embroidery floss to make the perfect summer camp accessories.  Don’t worry.  I’ve got a lot of stories to tell about this time in my life later.

IMG_8603 2.jpg

This scrappy quilt design has been rattling around in my head since my friend Lindsay taught a string quilt class at Crimson Tate nearly five years ago.  Combining the improvisation and scrappiness of string quilt block making with a little touch of organization, the Bracelet Making Quilt came to life.

IMG_9717

Big thank you to Dan Clayton of Quilting by the Stitch for his expert quilting!

This quilt began by foundation piecing strips to a page of our newly delivered telephone book.  It looked like a hot mess, as seen here.  I created four messes that looked relatively the same and squared those blocks to a common measurement.

IMG_8301.jpg

I didn’t worry if pieces were the same size, or if they were cut and sewn straight.  I just sewed.  Larger blocks started to form as I made four relatively “same” sequenced blocks, which became the centers.

IMG_8287.jpg

Eight more blocks, sewn in reverse order, surround the original four to make the greater, larger block.  I added half a square of solid so that the plus sign shape could emerge by contrasting against the background.   Take a look at how it morphed and formed.

Up on the design wall it went and pow.  The quilt layout was made.  If you’re interested in a tutorial on how to put this together, I’d encourage you to join our eNewsletter.  I’ll send out an alert when it’s ready.  You might also get some news on what’s happening at Crimson Tate along the way, too.  (Be cautioned, we don’t send many emails!  I promise not to flood your inbox and I most definitely won’t share your email address with anyone else.)

Utilizing my leftover scraps, I made something fun on the back along with some double gauze.  SO. STINKING. SOFT.

IMG_9726

IMG_9723

I love remembering and dreaming about my days as a camp counselor hiking, swimming, canoeing, basket weaving (for real), and bracelet making.  I love that this quilt serves as a marker for an important time in my life.

Want to win some Piecemeal of your own?  Wanna win a coordinating bundle of FreeSpirit Solids? We’ve got six one yard pieces provided by the kind folks at FreeSpirit to give away and Crimson Tate is giving away the solids bundle!!  You’ve got three ways to win!! Do all three, get three chances!!  Winner will be drawn Monday, November 27, 2017.

  1. Leave a comment here and tell me about your experience level in friendship bracelet making.  Novice, intermediate, expert?  I’d love to know about your favorite flosses, patterns, and colors to create.  If you’re a stranger to friendship bracelets, tell me about your most important friendship and how you signify it. (I mean, if it’s not in the form of friendship bracelets, what form does it come in? Matching hats, friendship tattoos, etc.???)
  2. Share this blog post on your facebook page (as a public post) and tag Crimson Tate :: Modern Quilter and FreeSpirit Fabrics in the post!  We’ll only be able to see it if you make the post public.  If you’re so inclined, be sure to give us a LIKE, too.
  3. Take this game to Instagram!  Post the photo below and tag @crimsontate @sewtinagivens @freespiritfabric #BraceletMakingQuilt and tell me who you think spells their name correctly.  Is it Tina Givens or is it Heather Givans?  Total pretend bonus for choosing me. 😉  Of course, we’d love it if you’d follow Crimson Tate there, too, if it’s in your heart.

That Amy Butler.  She’s a ray of sunshine.  A precious lil’ lover.  A bright shiny light.  All the things super vivid and lovely and glittery; that pretty much sums up Ms. Butler.  I love that cat dearly so when I was asked to make something with her newest collection Soul Mate, I couldn’t say no.

IMG_6301

Introducing the first project, the *Footnote quilt pattern was calling my name with all 24 pieces of Soul Mate and 24 coordinating FreeSpirit solids, I knew this quilt was destined to be a stunner and eventually to live on my bed!!

IMG_9076

Here’s my dad giving his seal of approval during the design process.  He also came to the rescue by bringing me my mom’s sewing machine when mine crashed during the process.

IMG_6982

I’m so grateful for Quilting by the Stitch who was able to quilt this duder beautifully!   I really like simple, irregular quilting.  These lines work like magic.

IMG_9044

Bright colors totally found in nature, this collection is incredibly love infused and filled with wonder.
