I HEART Patterns by Annie + #SewPINK + {GIVEAWAY}

SEWPINK-initiative-info-opt.jpg

Hey hey!!  I’m the next stop on the #SewPINK blog tour.  And honestly, when Annie Unrein asked me to be a part of this #SewPink Initiative, I didn’t hesitate.  I said yes because the fact is that I super love Annie and I’d happily do anything for her.  And because Annie is one of those people who lets you in, you connect with her instantly,  there is no stopping our friendship.

As many of you know, beyond hanging out at Crimson Tate the fabric store, I design fabric for Windham Fabrics. And from the very first collection, Annie volunteered her talents and time to make objects from my designs.

From By Annie’s Catch-All Caddy in Succulents fabric:

LRHeather4379.jpg

To the MJ Tote in Literary fabric:

Literary_MJTote_Front.jpg

And now The Out and About Bag made from my latest collection coming in January 2020, Pencil Club:

OUTANDABOUTBAG2.jpg

Here’s a look at the stack of fabric.

PENCILCLUBBUNDLE1.jpg

I’m so honored to know Annie, and that she makes such wonderful things from my fabrics is a bonus.  When she asked me to be a part of her tour, I said yes without really giving it much consideration.  But as I sat to reflect on the expectation of this commitment and the amazingness that is Annie Unrein, I was stunned.  I am in awe of her commitment to bring awareness to simple acts that can help save people’s lives.  And who is doing that in and for our community?  And who is doing that for themselves?

Here’s what I know.  We are a community of encouragers, creatives, doers, inspiration seekers, sewers, and more.  And a lot of that doing and seeking and encouraging often doesn’t leave room or time for the doing of basic needs like taking care of ourselves.  When was the last time you went to the doctor?  Am I talking to only myself right now? At the core of what ByAnnie Patterns is charging us with is a simple act.  Basic awareness of our own bodies, taking the time to have regular check-ups, and a call to recognizing our own worth.  How beautiful.

I’m reminded of the beautiful song written by musician India Arie that gets to the core of who we are and encapsulates our worth.  Check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ism8dBjxKvc

I am light, I am light

[Verse 1]
I am not the things my family did
I am not the voices in my head
I am not the pieces of the brokenness inside
I am light, I am light (x2)

[Verse 2]
I’m not the mistakes that I have made
Or any of the things that caused me pain
I am not the pieces of the dream I left behind
I am light, I am light (x2)

[Verse 3]
I am not the color of my eyes
I am not the skin on the outside
I am not my age
I am not my race
My soul inside is all light, all light
Oh light, all light

[Verse 4]
I am divinity defined
I am the God on the inside
I am a star, a piece of it all
I am light

Annie’s call is definitely simple.

Keep your wits about you.  Recognize your worth.  And, get yourself to the doctor, especially if you haven’t been in a while.  It’s important.  If you need resource and information on understanding how breast cancer effects us, there are great resources on finding screening programs here:

Now onto what I created!  I wanted to make something loving and of course I wanted to use my new fabric collection coming early next year, Pencil Club.

heartpillow.jpg

Using the sweet Heart Block Tutorial I created, I set my intention to make a pillow using Pencil Club and using ByAnnie’s Soft and Stable for the interfacing. You can find that tutorial here.

Here are my fabric choices including pencils, erasers, and pencil shavings plus a few Artisan [shot] cottons by Windham fabrics.

IMG_9001.jpeg

I cut a host of squares for the heart and for the back ground, and made four half square triangles.  I followed the tutorial as written but changed how I squared the HST.  I pulled out my Bloc-Loc 2.5″ HST ruler which made it a snap.

IMG_9003.jpeg

I laid out the blocks on my lightweight interfacing, but this time, I laid them out on point which meant I ended up using 57 background squares, 17 heart squares, and four HST to create the top.

IMG_9006.jpeg

Once it was sewn together, I loosely trimmed away the rugged edge. I trimmed just enough so that I could trim again once quilted. I pinned the top to a piece of Soft and Stable, ByAnnie’s foam interfacing, so that I could quilt it.

IMG_9010.jpeg

Once quilted, I sewed a back using an envelope closure method and VOILA — a cute lil’ pillow was born!

IMG_9014 2.jpeg

Thanks for following along.  It was a lot of information today.

We’d like to give away a selection of our patterns to our ByAnnie readers!  Three lucky winners will receive a few patterns, templates, and fabrics from Crimson Tate.  How can you win?!

  1.  Pledge to take care of yourself.

That’s it.  Oh, wait.  I guess you have to give us your information in order for a drawing to happen.  Three ways to enter.

  1. Leave a comment here that says “I LOVE ANNIE” or something similar.
  2. Find and follow both Crimson Tate and Heather Givans on Instagram, leaving a comment on both #SewPINK posts.  Again, emoting your appreciation for Annie Unrein or someone in your life that helps you step back and take stock and take time for yourself will get you two chances to win.
  3. Sign-up for Crimson Tate email newsletter.  You’ll find the link to do so here.

We will draw at the end of October and alert the troops to the winner.  Thank you for following along and thank you for being in this awesome community.

Tall Trees Block for Aurifil Thread

IMG_8577

What a fun year it’s been being on the Aurifil Design Team with the amazing company of so many people that I admire.  Each month a different designer created a block for a block-of-the-month quilt based on the color wheel.  I lucked out and got GREEN!!  I love green.  I love mixing greens of more yellow hues with blues and aquas.  I can’t hardly handle myself. 😉

Find the blog here to see my inspirations and to learn a little more about what makes me tick along with instructions for creating your own Tall Trees block:   https://auribuzz.wordpress.com/2017/11/15/aurifil-2017-november-designer-of-the-month-heather-givans/

Now, looking for the ruler I used?  These little geese finish at 1/2″ x 1″ – this is some heavy lifting if you do it alone; you might need a team lift that comes in the form of a teeny tiny BlocLoc ruler.   It looks like this.  Click on image to find.

Want to win an awesome Aurifil thread box??

Sewing for a Cause :: Kangaroo Cuddlers for Riley NICU – Year Three!

We’re revisiting a project we’ve participated in for the past few years that spreads good-giving. We know you’ll love this one. We’ve partnered with one of our lovely customers and friend who is involved in Kangaroo Cuddlers which is a program that encourages skin to skin contact of mother and baby.  Read what the project coordinator has to say:

IMG_4805

Kangaroo Care is hard to accomplish when your little one is in constant care in the NICU. A team of doctors devised a great program that provides opportunity for moms to wear a little kangaroo inside their clothing and when they aren’t able to be with their baby, the little kangaroo stays with the child. It reminds the mothers that this skin to skin contact is very important in early childhood as well as provides comfort and security for the baby as the swatch contains the mother’s calming smell.

How sweet is this? You want to help us sew these dudes? Let’s talk deets.

Who: You, silly! Our wonderful sewy community.

What: The Riley NICU Kangaroo-a-thon! The initial goal is to collect 300 Kangaroo Cuddlers.

When: Please complete and deliver your finished cuddlers by Monday April 24, 2017

Where: Drop them off or mail to Crimson Tate – 845 Massachusetts Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46204

How: Download this simple Kangaroo Cuddler pattern and make as many ‘Roos as you please, and please don’t forget to closely follow the guidelines because a parent has to wear this under their clothes and a baby has to snuggle with it. Keep it as simple as possible!

100x150_egiftcardjpg.jpgMaking it EVEN MORE MORE FUN:

FAQ:

Hey, Heather!  Do I have to use fleece?  Can’t I just use a bunch of scraps that I’ve got lying around?  I just upholstered my couch in burlap.  Wouldn’t these be so cute in burlap?

Dear Scrap Hoarder,

While we always want to encourage the use of fabric refuse, I want you to imagine the parent that receives this cuddler to wear under their clothing.  We want it to be as soft and beautiful as possible.  While using your old upholstery fabric might seem like a good idea, we’d like to stick to fleece.  Keep it simple, sister (and brother).

Hey, Heather!  I live far far away, like close to Mars, and have never been to your store except through the earthen world wide web.  I’d love to participate but I’m wondering if that’s ok?  Will you accept cuddlers from billions of miles away?

Dear Great Beyond,

Heck yes!  We get so tickled and excited when we receive mail from the great beyond.  If you live 100 miles away or in another galaxy, we’ll gladly take your cuddlers and give them to a family who can use them.

Hey, Heather!  I really want to win.  Can I turn in two, three, even four batches of cuddlers?  I mean.  I can’t be stopped.  My goal is 12,000 cuddlers this year.  I’m crazy competitive.

Dear Elite Cuddler Sewer,

Of course. Bring them to us in waves! It would help us greatly if you count those cuddlers and give us a running total each time you bring them to us, but we’ll start the clock and keep stats for you.  We’re totally into helping you train for the Olympic Kangaroo Games.

Hey, Heather!  I need to go get my car fixed, perm my hair, travel to Bolivia for a microfiche conference, build a house, do my taxes, rescue my forty-second miniature sloth, and complete a Rubix Cube before I can begin sewing these cuddlers for you.  What if I don’t make the deadline?  What happens?

Dear Over Committed List Maker,

You can always send and give us Kangaroo Cuddlers to be passed along to Riley Children’s Hospital NICU anytime.   You can do this year round and in fact, some customers do! Riley always needs them for new parents.  In order to receive the coupon and be eligible for the gift certificate, however, you’ll need to make the deadline of April 24.  Sounds like you’ve got a couple of minutes you can work on some cuddlers before then!  Good Luck!

Hey, Heather!  I, like you, love mail!  I want to mail these little duders to you.  What address should I put on this box?

Dear Precious Postal Fan,

Please send them to:

Crimson Tate

ATTN: Kangaroo Lover

845 Massachusetts Ave Suite A

Indianapolis, IN 46204

Please don’t forget to include your name, email address, mailing address, instagram handle, and your official count!

Thank you everyone for your generosity.  The awesome folks at Riley Hospital and those little babies thank you, too.

Guys. These dudies are the best gift to give for your guild’s holiday exchange. Or a super nice gesture for your granny that taught you to quilt. Stash starters are budget priced but incredibly beautiful. That’s why they are the featured little lovers for day thirteen of Crimson Tate’s Fireside Holiday Gift Guide. It’s a beaute, Clark. #crimsontate #FiresideHolidayGiftGuide#itsabeauteclark #stashstarters #amybutlerdesign #joeldewberry#parsongray #annamariahorner

Day Fourteen

egiftcardfire.jpg

It’s day fourteen of the Crimson Tate Fireside Holiday Gift Guide and this one is a doozie! We’re celebrating www.crimsontate.com today and the brand spanking new e-Gift card! You can use the e-Giftcard online and also in our brick and mortar for all fabrics, notions, classes, and gift items! Gift cards from Crimson Tate don’t say, “I had no clue what to get you,” but rather, “I knew you would want to coordinate your own fabrics, dearie-lou!”

Just let us know when you’ll be down and we’ll throw your bag of goodies right into your car. Day Fifteen

IMG_4880.jpgstella_srr677_multi.jpg

I’m giggling to myself on day fifteen of Crimson Tate’s Fireside Holiday Gift Guide as we present these cutie Made with Love sewing labels by Rae Ritchie. I made ornaments, gift tags, and have reserved a few for sewing onto holiday gifts. There are 65+ tags in the panel. I would give you an exact number but we had big debates at the store yesterday as to the ACTUAL number of tags, thus the reason I’m giggling. Oy vey! OK. Give that www.crimsontate.com a try. Head over to project starters –> panels #crimsontate #FiresideHolidayGiftGuide #raeritchieillustration#handmadewithlove #quiltlabels #diyholiday #handmadeholidays

Day Sixteen

books_fireside.jpg

The gang’s all here!!! Who doesn’t want to curl up by the fire and thumb through a great sewing book with coffee and shortbread cookies in hand? Or Mexican wedding cakes? (My personal favorite.) These authors, precious little lovers, have created fantastic resource that will inspire your winter sewing projects. Books truly are the perfect holiday gift. That’s why on day sixteen of the Crimson Tate Fireside Holiday Gift Guide, we support your love of books and reading and encourage you to get another bookcase and some floor supports to withstand the weight because we’ve got some goodies and you’re gonna need to make some room. #realtalk #Books #crimsontate#FiresideHolidayGiftGuide

It’s day eighteen of the Crimson Tate Fireside Holiday Gift Guide and the temperatures in the midwest are dropping! My dogs spend all of their time sitting by the radiators. So in honor of old man winter, might we suggest this amazing bundle of Shetland Flannel in all the vintagey right colors. Swooooon. Don’t tell David, I think this is what he’s getting for Christmas. #crimsontate #firesideholidaygiftguide #shetlandflannel#cotton #houndstooth #projectstarters #bundles crimsontate.com –> project starters –> bundles

Holy cats! It’s cold outside. Let’s make some beautiful scarves. Day nineteen of the Crimson Tate Fireside Holiday Guide suggests Liberty of London Tana lawn! We’ve cut these dudies into the perfect sized pieces to make infinity scarves (1/2 and 1 yard cuts) or choose bundles if you want to do a little English paper piecing by the fire. Aside: we named all of the bundles British slang. Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

CorrespondenceQuilt_front.jpg

In just nine fat quarters, you’ll have the CUTEST little project to give to your paper loving quilty friend (and leftover fabrics to play with for yourself).

CorrespondenceQuilt-v3-EXTERIOR

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

Crimson Tate

Photo Eric Lubrick

My booth looked like this:

IMG_0008

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

IMG_1976

I will not fail in returning correspondence to you.  You took the time to write, I’ll get this done.  Promise.  And for everyone who wrote to me, I have included a sweeeeeet surprise in the envelope.

I have a new collection of fabric for Windham Fabrics that will be presented at the International Quilt Market in Houston, TX in late October.  Soon, I’ll announce an all call for help with that collection, too.  If you want to be notified of what we’re up to and what I need to create my booth, sign up for Crimson Tate’s electronic newsletter here.

I’m super jazzed that in Paper Obsessed I could combine my love of fabric and quilting with my love of doodling, mail, and embroidery.

Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Sunday Edition with Karen McTavish !!!!

karenMcTIt’s easy like Sunday Morning.  Although, what Karen McTavish does isn’t easy.  Today’s Paper Obsessed blog is happening right here with the talented, energetic, lovely, and real Karen McTavish.  She quilted my improv Air Traffic Control Quilt that I fondly refer to as Aerodynamics.

Paper Air Plane Without Girls Flattened.jpgHere’s what Karen has to say:

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.

Let’s talk WINNING FABRIC. So you want some Paper Obsessed goodness of your own, eh? Sweet Baby Giucy Giuce :: Paper Obsessed Blog Tour HITS Instagram

Karen Guicy Selfie.jpg

How did Karen LePage end up looking so lovely in this photo and Giuseppe Ribaudo, commonly known as Giucy Giuce, and I look like loons??? It’s no surprise, I suspect.

I have to tell you.  You know how you meet people on the Instagram and you think “can they really be like this in real life?” I’m here to tell you that Giuseppe is as sincere and a beautiful person in the real as he is on the Gram.

After seeing this photo, I knew we were meant to be friends.
