2023 Crimson Tate’s Big Old Hug We Call Small Business Saturday

Awwww yeahhhh. Welcome to the 2023 Small Business Saturday Extravaganza we call The Big Hug. It always feels like a homecoming, SBS, at Crimson Tate. Like the ruckus and fun energy that nieces and nephews bring, we are doing the same!!! We feel the big old hug you give to us as we kick off the holiday season and we reciprocate that hug right back with wide open arms in the form of giveaways, hoopla, merriment, discounts, and fun. We’re so glad to be in this community with you and we see you and your outpouring of love and fun and we’re giving it right back.

At 9:00 AM our doors will open on Small Business Saturday where we’ll be giving away 10 swag bags filled with goods from our other local business friends including our longtime bestie Silver in the City, Decorate Indy, and Boomerang BTQ. Help support the efforts of IU Health Comfort Quilts.

I’d like to invite you to support the efforts of local IU Health Comfort Care Quilt group, spearheaded by Crimson Tate customer and friend, trauma surgeon Dr. Ashely Meagher.  The group creates quilts for trauma patients who are at the end of their treatment and are receiving only palliative care.  What this means is that their conditions are terminal and nothing more can be done.  This is where Ashley’s love and compassion for her patients, and her passion for quilting kicks in.  She has created a network of quilters who make quilts for these patients to use in their final days.  What a beautiful, tangible way to express care and love for local families who are faced with sobering realities.  Those quilts will be passed on to the families of the patients.   Ashley from the beginning has made a conscience effort to create a partnership with Crimson Tate for which I am incredibly grateful and hope that you, too. She has made a commitment to procure and source as much as she can from local, independently owned fabric stores.

How can you help?! Can you create a small lap quilt for her cause?

There are a number of ways you can help:

1) Make a quilt – ~40″ x 50-60″  which will fit on a hospital bed.  Please, no religious, holiday, or children’s themes

2) Make a quilt top – these will be used during  quilting parties to make “sandwich and tie quilts”

3) Donate fabric, batting, thread, notions. We’ve created a product on our website that goes directly to Comfort Care Quilts. We don’t take any administrative fees for this product. You donate $50, Indiana Comfort Care Quilts receives $50. You’ll find the donation product here.

Valori Wells’s Murmur for FreeSpirit is Bright and Beautiful {plus three giveaways}

My earliest memory of meeting Valori Wells was at the Kansas City Quilt Market in 2011 when I ran into Val walking to the convention center and my friend Lindsay Lefevere said, “Hey!? I know you!?” Lindsay is a big fan, obvy, and in that moment, a friendship was born.  With each subsequent quilt market, I have admired Val’s bold choice of color and design.  As a fellow printmaker, I love peeking in on her process, inspirations, and layered approach to fabric design.  Murmur, this vibrant hummingbird inspired collection, sways me into loving her even more.

When my buddies at FreeSpirit asked me to hop on the Murmur blog tour, I happily accepted.  I mean, Grandma Mac (Lois) would not have liked it if I passed up a chance to make something from a fabric collection that celebrates the star of most bird feeders in North America.

Twenty-four delightfully beachy-colored fabrics are found in Murmur.  I paired Val’s work with twelve electric FreeSpirit solids, which truly are my favorite to use plus I added good old Arctic white.  I mean, if it’s gonna be beachy, we gotta cool it off with North Pole sashing, y’all.  Because FreeSpirit solids coordinate so seamlessly with many of my favorite designers like Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt, and Tula Pink, I can’t stop using them. I’m in love!! The hand is incredibly soft and is the same weight as other FreeSpirit fabrics, which makes me very happy.  Nothing is compromised in the making of these babies.  If you haven’t used them, I would encourage you to give it a try.

Through a series of trial and error, I came up with a design that incorporated stripes, a ginormous 60-degree ruler that I use in my Succulent Garden quilt pattern, and for fun, I wanted an overall emphasis on vertical design.  Here is my process.

First, marvel at Murmur.

Next, coordinate the soft and luxe FreeSpirit solids.

Now, look at them all together, tilting head left then right, squint at some point.

I then separated all of the fabrics into two piles that had equal value and scale and chopped them into .75″ – 3.5″ strips.

Through the magic of the internet, I made a quilt. 😉 I’m not gonna lie, I went through a couple of versions and layouts and landed on what I think is a light and airy design that compliments the brightness of Val’s fabrics.

My quilt obviously celebrates city-dwelling hummingbirds or perhaps the country hummingbirds on vacation in the big city?  Across the street from Crimson Tate, the fabric store I hang out at, there is a massive construction project.  On the day that I took photos of my Murmur quilt, they were full out digging up utilities in the street.  There was no angle that wouldn’t have caught their workings, so I embraced it and kept it in my frame.  Now you get to enjoy it, too.  I’m happy to report the construction is no longer spilling into the street but rather more contained within the parcel of land that is being developed.

I love the way the FreeSpirit Mesa (orange) vibrates against the oranges of Murmur.  Some might suggest they love the way oranges and yellows of the construction site pairs nicely with Murmur, too.

Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.

How did Karen LePage end up looking so lovely in this photo and Giuseppe Ribaudo, commonly known as Giucy Giuce, and I look like loons??? It’s no surprise, I suspect.

I have to tell you.  You know how you meet people on the Instagram and you think “can they really be like this in real life?” I’m here to tell you that Giuseppe is as sincere and a beautiful person in the real as he is on the Gram.

After seeing this photo, I knew we were meant to be friends.

Awwwwww.  This photo was taken the day that the advanced yardage of my collection Paper Obsessed came in and the lovely Amanda Castor rushed over after work to pick up fabric she needed to make her cool quilt pattern Spiral Bound.  I love love love this photo and I love that dear Amanda. (Although, someone should have told me to brush my hair!!!!)  This girl makes so many quilts and so many projects.  I’m constantly yelling “WHAT?! AGAIN?! I don’t know how it is that I have not personally taken a photograph of Annie Unrein of Patterns By Annie, so this photograph I took at the Cactus King in Houston, Texas in 2014 will have to suffice.  See, Annie and I became FAST friends when I revealed that my first fabric collection was themed Succulents and she, like me, is a succulent lover from way back.  Annie is incredibly hard working and incredibly talented.  I’m honored to have her as a part of my squad.  Take a look in on what she did with Succulents and then head over to her blog to check out what she did with Paper Obsessed.  LOVE THAT GIRL!!!
