2023 Crimson Tate’s Big Old Hug We Call Small Business Saturday

Awwww yeahhhh. Welcome to the 2023 Small Business Saturday Extravaganza we call The Big Hug. It always feels like a homecoming, SBS, at Crimson Tate. Like the ruckus and fun energy that nieces and nephews bring, we are doing the same!!! We feel the big old hug you give to us as we kick off the holiday season and we reciprocate that hug right back with wide open arms in the form of giveaways, hoopla, merriment, discounts, and fun. We’re so glad to be in this community with you and we see you and your outpouring of love and fun and we’re giving it right back.

At 9:00 AM our doors will open on Small Business Saturday where we’ll be giving away 10 swag bags filled with goods from our other local business friends including our longtime bestie Silver in the City, Decorate Indy, and Boomerang BTQ. We are also excited about our new friends and local bookshop Tomorrow Bookstore and chocolatier The Best Chocolate in Town who both have opened their storefronts on the Ave in our block!!! And more!!! We’re excited about all the fun contained in these swag bags!!!

Every year there is a group of diehard Crimson Tate superfans that line up outside the store to be the first in line. What a fun tradition and every year I think surely they won’t be there when I roll up and for the past 10 years, they’ve proved me wrong. They show up. I see you. I love you. I thank you. We are all honored by your outpouring of support. Look at this fun right here.

…but wait…there’s more…

Every hour (on the hour-ish) we’ll be giving away one of SEVEN amazing Crimson Tate swag bags filled with some of our favorite patterns, fabrics, books, notions and love. For every $20 you spend, you’ll receive a ticket that will go into the drawing.  No need to be present to win. That means, if you’re shopping from home, you’ll have a chance to win!!! We’ll ship you your prize. WHAT?!

…but wait…there’s more…

We are GIVING AWAY AMAZING PRIZES ALL DAY AND SOME SUPER GRAND PRIZES AT THE END!!!! We employ something we like to call The Big Barrel of Fun. We’re gonna put your name in our Big Barrel of Fun and draw for prizes all day long at the top of the hour.

…but wait…there’s more…

This year we’re doing it again!!! We are including a philanthropic opportunity to support our buddies at Indiana Comfort Quilts.  Crimson Tate will give you multiple opportunities to win stuff.  Win-win-win, right?!

Help support the efforts of IU Health Comfort Quilts.

I’d like to invite you to support the efforts of local IU Health Comfort Care Quilt group, spearheaded by Crimson Tate customer and friend, trauma surgeon Dr. Ashely Meagher.  The group creates quilts for trauma patients who are at the end of their treatment and are receiving only palliative care.  What this means is that their conditions are terminal and nothing more can be done.  This is where Ashley’s love and compassion for her patients, and her passion for quilting kicks in.  She has created a network of quilters who make quilts for these patients to use in their final days.  What a beautiful, tangible way to express care and love for local families who are faced with sobering realities.  Those quilts will be passed on to the families of the patients.   Ashley from the beginning has made a conscience effort to create a partnership with Crimson Tate for which I am incredibly grateful and hope that you, too. She has made a commitment to procure and source as much as she can from local, independently owned fabric stores.

How can you help?! Can you create a small lap quilt for her cause?

There are a number of ways you can help:

1) Make a quilt – ~40″ x 50-60″  which will fit on a hospital bed.  Please, no religious, holiday, or children’s themes

2) Make a quilt top – these will be used during  quilting parties to make “sandwich and tie quilts”

3) Donate fabric, batting, thread, notions. We’ve created a product on our website that goes directly to Comfort Care Quilts. We don’t take any administrative fees for this product. You donate $50, Indiana Comfort Care Quilts receives $50. You’ll find the donation product here.

If you’ve got the time, you’ve got some stash, I’d love to invite you to create a Comfort Quilt for the patients of the trauma unit at IU Health.

Quilts approximately 40″ x 50-60″ are needed!

Don’t have time to quilt?! Wanna give supplies needed? For every batting you purchase specifically for Comfort Care Quilts, Crimson Tate will match your purchase. You purchase one batting we donate one batting. You purchase 12 battings for Comfort Care Quilts, Crimson Tate will donate 12 battings yielding 24 battings for their important cause. The batting donation product is here. We’re going to give you FIVE tickets for every batting you purchase to donate to Comfort Care Quilts. FIVE!!! YEAHHH. That’s a great big hug all around.

That’s right, for every package of batting that you purchase for Indiana Comfort Quilts, Crimson Tate will match your donation.  You buy one, we buy one. And, we’re gonna give you five tickets to be entered into the pool of two grand prizes.

Bless your lil’ heart and thank you for using your talents and resources for good.  We love you!!

Please note this product will be given to the Indiana Comfort Quilting group and nothing will be sent via mail to you.  You will only receive good wishes and big big thank yous and all kinds of love from us to you.  Let us know if you have questions. Purchase your donation batting here. We’re gonna give you 5 tickets automatically for being so awesome.

All of us here at Crimson Tate thank you for donating to their project.  Imagine being able to use your talents and know-how to provide compassion and care to someone who is at the end of their life.  Amazing.  What an amazing gift.

…but wait…there’s more…

Let’s pretend that you don’t win an hourly drawing. I know. I know. What a bunch of hooey. No fear, we’re going to take your ticket and add it to the end of the day drawings for three grand prizes!!! Let’s take a look at Grand Prize Number One!

We’re giving away a Crimson Tate Countdown to Fun box!!! WHAT?!?! That’s right. One lucky winner will receive a box of fun in the mail!! There’s still time (and boxes available) to ship one to your mom, your bestie, your partner, anyone who would love receiving fabric every day of the advent season!!! You’ll find boxes counting 8, 24, and 31 days here. That’s totally happy.

…but wait…there’s more…

Grand Prize Number Two is a Hidden Agenda quilt kit featuring Anna Maria Horner and FreeSpirit solid fabrics!! WHATTTT?! This dudie is a stunner and a fan favorite. What a beautiful palette and those jewel toned fabrics? TOTAL LOVE. Find your own Hidden Agenda Quilt kit here. I mean, if you can’t wait to find out if you’ve won or not. 😉

Dear Tate de Crimson,

I’m an international customer.  Am I eligible to win the bundles or hourly tote bag giveaways?  I’m tres excited to know.  Sincerely, La International Customer

Dear Crimson Tate,

I’ve been considering becoming a VIP.  If I become a VIP, can I get tickets for that?  Also, I was thinking about buying myself a gift certificate and then I want to use that gift certificate to buy my VIP membership.  Will I get tickets for the purchase of the gift certificate and then also when I use the gift certificate to get my awesome VIP tote bag and pin as a charter member?  Sincerely, Double Dipper

Dear Dipper,

You are so cute.  Here’s the deal, D.  Every gift card purchase made on Small Business Saturday will be awarded tickets!  Yayayyyyy.  However, if you redeem that gift card during this time period, you won’t get double tickets, boooo.  That just makes more admin work for us and we’re not so into that.  If you’ve got a gift card you bought yourself before the game begins, it will be eligible for tickets.  We’ll give you tickets for all your purchases, just not doublely.  Bless your little heart. I see you.

Dear Crimson Tate,

Girl! I’m VIP.  Are there any VIP perks for me?!  And do I still accrue points during this time period? You know I love you and I love being at Crimson Tate.  Lemme know, ok? Sincerely, VIP Charter Member

Dear VIP,

YES! You still get points! Just by your beautiful nature of already pledging your love of Ms. Alizarin Crimson Tate (you know that her first name is really Alizarin, right?) as a VIP member, we’re going to enter you into the large drawing, and you’ll receive tickets at a faster rate per the email sent yesterday.  Bam.  You’re important to us.  Don’t you forget it. We love you.  Being VIP is awesome!

Dear Crimson Tate,

I want to contribute to IU Health Comfort Quilts how do I do that?! Sincerely, The Giver

Dear Giver,

Awwwww.  Thank you.  Definitely feel free to mail us your finished quilt.  We will pass it along to the folks at Comfort Quilts.  If you aren’t able to create a quilt, we will have more opportunities to help.  Don’t fret.  We can put your kindness to work and we thank you for being willing. Please note that we cannot accept fabrics, notions, and battings at this time from your home. All goods that pass through Crimson Tate for Comfort Care are either finished quilts, quilt tops, donation batting purchased at Crimson Tate, or gift cards directly donated to CCQ. Thanks for understanding.

LOVE YOU!!! Like, a lot.

Valori Wells’s Murmur for FreeSpirit is Bright and Beautiful {plus three giveaways}

IMG_1670.jpg

“Amongst the early morning dew and the rays of sunshine emerge the sounds of summer. The delicate wings of the hummingbird whispering to me – Hello! Good Morning! My heart fills with love and happiness as my garden comes to life with their energy and grace fluttering among the sunflowers. Murmur was inspired by these magnificent creatures and the wonder and delight they bring.”  -Valori Wells

My earliest memory of meeting Valori Wells was at the Kansas City Quilt Market in 2011 when I ran into Val walking to the convention center and my friend Lindsay Lefevere said, “Hey!? I know you!?” Lindsay is a big fan, obvy, and in that moment, a friendship was born.  With each subsequent quilt market, I have admired Val’s bold choice of color and design.  As a fellow printmaker, I love peeking in on her process, inspirations, and layered approach to fabric design.  Murmur, this vibrant hummingbird inspired collection, sways me into loving her even more.

When my buddies at FreeSpirit asked me to hop on the Murmur blog tour, I happily accepted.  I mean, Grandma Mac (Lois) would not have liked it if I passed up a chance to make something from a fabric collection that celebrates the star of most bird feeders in North America.

xIY5F+McQ7GSAX%GAMiPMA_thumb_6ab2.jpg

Twenty-four delightfully beachy-colored fabrics are found in Murmur.  I paired Val’s work with twelve electric FreeSpirit solids, which truly are my favorite to use plus I added good old Arctic white.  I mean, if it’s gonna be beachy, we gotta cool it off with North Pole sashing, y’all.  Because FreeSpirit solids coordinate so seamlessly with many of my favorite designers like Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt, and Tula Pink, I can’t stop using them. I’m in love!! The hand is incredibly soft and is the same weight as other FreeSpirit fabrics, which makes me very happy.  Nothing is compromised in the making of these babies.  If you haven’t used them, I would encourage you to give it a try.

Uw6IQAK+Tuu%gCI+OjG6Ew_thumb_6ab9.jpg

Through a series of trial and error, I came up with a design that incorporated stripes, a ginormous 60-degree ruler that I use in my Succulent Garden quilt pattern, and for fun, I wanted an overall emphasis on vertical design.  Here is my process.

First, marvel at Murmur.

IMG_6671.jpeg

Next, coordinate the soft and luxe FreeSpirit solids.

IMG_6678.jpg

Now, look at them all together, tilting head left then right, squint at some point.

IMG_1670.jpg

I then separated all of the fabrics into two piles that had equal value and scale and chopped them into .75″ – 3.5″ strips.

IMG_6711.jpeg

Through the magic of the internet, I made a quilt. 😉 I’m not gonna lie, I went through a couple of versions and layouts and landed on what I think is a light and airy design that compliments the brightness of Val’s fabrics.

IMG_9841.jpeg

My quilt obviously celebrates city-dwelling hummingbirds or perhaps the country hummingbirds on vacation in the big city?  Across the street from Crimson Tate, the fabric store I hang out at, there is a massive construction project.  On the day that I took photos of my Murmur quilt, they were full out digging up utilities in the street.  There was no angle that wouldn’t have caught their workings, so I embraced it and kept it in my frame.  Now you get to enjoy it, too.  I’m happy to report the construction is no longer spilling into the street but rather more contained within the parcel of land that is being developed.

IMG_9848.jpeg

IMG_9850 2.jpeg

I love the way the FreeSpirit Mesa (orange) vibrates against the oranges of Murmur.  Some might suggest they love the way oranges and yellows of the construction site pairs nicely with Murmur, too.

Big thanks to the people of FreeSpirit fabrics who invited me along for the ride.  I love this quilt and plan on using it all summer. #bestsummerever

NOTE: GIVEAWAY IS NOW OVER.  Now for the nitty gritty.  I’ve got THREE things to giveaway!  Are you ready? I’ve got a fat quarter bundle of Murmur.  I’ve got the entire lot of Murmur as long slim quarters measuring approximately 9″ x 44″, and I’ve got the leftover strips of of both Murmur and FreeSpirit coordinating solids that are already cut into long pieces ready to be sewn.  There are probably enough strips to make a lap-size quilt.  Thank you to the nice folks at FreeSpirit fabrics for the Murmur and to the lovely Crimson Tate for the FreeSpirit solids.  Here are three ways to win!!

Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

CorrespondenceQuilt_front.jpg

In just nine fat quarters, you’ll have the CUTEST little project to give to your paper loving quilty friend (and leftover fabrics to play with for yourself).

CorrespondenceQuilt-v3-EXTERIOR

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

Crimson Tate

Photo Eric Lubrick

My booth looked like this:

IMG_0008

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

IMG_1976

I will not fail in returning correspondence to you.  You took the time to write, I’ll get this done.  Promise.  And for everyone who wrote to me, I have included a sweeeeeet surprise in the envelope.

I have a new collection of fabric for Windham Fabrics that will be presented at the International Quilt Market in Houston, TX in late October.  Soon, I’ll announce an all call for help with that collection, too.  If you want to be notified of what we’re up to and what I need to create my booth, sign up for Crimson Tate’s electronic newsletter here.

I’m super jazzed that in Paper Obsessed I could combine my love of fabric and quilting with my love of doodling, mail, and embroidery.

Here’s a little photo essay of building the Correspondence Mini Quilt:

I’ve had so much fun embroidering with the Aurifloss by Aurifil Threads.  Some of you already have this kit and pattern because you purchased it through QuiltyBox where I was the guest artist for the month of June.  Wahooo!!!  I can’t wait to see your creations!

Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Sunday Edition with Karen McTavish !!!!

karenMcTIt’s easy like Sunday Morning.  Although, what Karen McTavish does isn’t easy.  Today’s Paper Obsessed blog is happening right here with the talented, energetic, lovely, and real Karen McTavish.  She quilted my improv Air Traffic Control Quilt that I fondly refer to as Aerodynamics.

Paper Air Plane Without Girls Flattened.jpgHere’s what Karen has to say:

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.

How did Karen LePage end up looking so lovely in this photo and Giuseppe Ribaudo, commonly known as Giucy Giuce, and I look like loons??? It’s no surprise, I suspect.

I have to tell you.  You know how you meet people on the Instagram and you think “can they really be like this in real life?” I’m here to tell you that Giuseppe is as sincere and a beautiful person in the real as he is on the Gram.

After seeing this photo, I knew we were meant to be friends.

Crimson Tate HEARTS Sew Sweetness :: Paper Obsessed Blog Tour of the Day!!

IMG_2981 (1).jpgI’m not kidding.  If you ever get a chance to hear Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness give a lecture on interfacings, it’ll change your life.  Go go go!!! And then I think, how nutty am I that I would geek out over something like INTERFACING?!  Sara knows exactly what product to use in what situation.  She’s a master.  And a totally brilliant pattern writer.  I’m thrilled that today Sara is the stop on the Paper Obsessed blog tour.  There are only five days left to tool around to all these stops, look in on the inspirations, and enter to win AT EVERY STOP Paper Obsessed fabric, Crimson Tate Swag, and a Correspondence Mini-Quilt pattern.  Woooot.

Tour Guide Amanda Castor of Material Girl Quilts :: {Paper Obsessed BLOG HOP Continues}

Amanda

Awwwwww.  This photo was taken the day that the advanced yardage of my collection Paper Obsessed came in and the lovely Amanda Castor rushed over after work to pick up fabric she needed to make her cool quilt pattern Spiral Bound.  I love love love this photo and I love that dear Amanda. (Although, someone should have told me to brush my hair!!!!)  This girl makes so many quilts and so many projects.  I’m constantly yelling “WHAT?! AGAIN?! You’re done with another one?!?!?” And each is so beautiful.  Amanda is today’s tour guide.  Head over to her blog and see what she’s been up to.

First We Bonded over Succulents : Now We’re Paper Sisters :: Paper Obsessed Blog Tour Continues with Annie Unrein of ByAnnie.com

IMG_4540.jpg

I don’t know how it is that I have not personally taken a photograph of Annie Unrein of Patterns By Annie, so this photograph I took at the Cactus King in Houston, Texas in 2014 will have to suffice.  See, Annie and I became FAST friends when I revealed that my first fabric collection was themed Succulents and she, like me, is a succulent lover from way back.  Annie is incredibly hard working and incredibly talented.  I’m honored to have her as a part of my squad.  Take a look in on what she did with Succulents and then head over to her blog to check out what she did with Paper Obsessed.  LOVE THAT GIRL!!!
