I HEART Patterns by Annie + #SewPINK + {GIVEAWAY}

SEWPINK-initiative-info-opt.jpg

Hey hey!!  I’m the next stop on the #SewPINK blog tour.  And honestly, when Annie Unrein asked me to be a part of this #SewPink Initiative, I didn’t hesitate.  I said yes because the fact is that I super love Annie and I’d happily do anything for her.  And because Annie is one of those people who lets you in, you connect with her instantly,  there is no stopping our friendship.

As many of you know, beyond hanging out at Crimson Tate the fabric store, I design fabric for Windham Fabrics. And from the very first collection, Annie volunteered her talents and time to make objects from my designs.

From By Annie’s Catch-All Caddy in Succulents fabric:

LRHeather4379.jpg

To the MJ Tote in Literary fabric:

And now The Out and About Bag made from my latest collection coming in January 2020, Pencil Club:

OUTANDABOUTBAG2.jpg

Here’s a look at the stack of fabric.

PENCILCLUBBUNDLE1.jpg

I’m so honored to know Annie, and that she makes such wonderful things from my fabrics is a bonus.  When she asked me to be a part of her tour, I said yes without really giving it much consideration.  But as I sat to reflect on the expectation of this commitment and the amazingness that is Annie Unrein, I was stunned.  I am in awe of her commitment to bring awareness to simple acts that can help save people’s lives.  And who is doing that in and for our community?  And who is doing that for themselves?

Here’s what I know.  We are a community of encouragers, creatives, doers, inspiration seekers, sewers, and more.  And a lot of that doing and seeking and encouraging often doesn’t leave room or time for the doing of basic needs like taking care of ourselves.  When was the last time you went to the doctor?  Am I talking to only myself right now? At the core of what ByAnnie Patterns is charging us with is a simple act.  Basic awareness of our own bodies, taking the time to have regular check-ups, and a call to recognizing our own worth.  How beautiful.

I’m reminded of the beautiful song written by musician India Arie that gets to the core of who we are and encapsulates our worth.  Check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ism8dBjxKvc

I am light, I am light

[Verse 1]
I am not the things my family did
I am not the voices in my head
I am not the pieces of the brokenness inside
I am light, I am light (x2)

[Verse 2]
I’m not the mistakes that I have made
Or any of the things that caused me pain
I am not the pieces of the dream I left behind
I am light, I am light (x2)

[Verse 3]
I am not the color of my eyes
I am not the skin on the outside
I am not my age
I am not my race
My soul inside is all light, all light
Oh light, all light

[Verse 4]
I am divinity defined
I am the God on the inside
I am a star, a piece of it all
I am light

Annie’s call is definitely simple.

Keep your wits about you.  Recognize your worth.  And, get yourself to the doctor, especially if you haven’t been in a while.  It’s important.  If you need resource and information on understanding how breast cancer effects us, there are great resources on finding screening programs here:

Now onto what I created!  I wanted to make something loving and of course I wanted to use my new fabric collection coming early next year, Pencil Club.

heartpillow.jpg

Using the sweet Heart Block Tutorial I created, I set my intention to make a pillow using Pencil Club and using ByAnnie’s Soft and Stable for the interfacing. You can find that tutorial here.

Here are my fabric choices including pencils, erasers, and pencil shavings plus a few Artisan [shot] cottons by Windham fabrics.

IMG_9001.jpeg

I cut a host of squares for the heart and for the back ground, and made four half square triangles.  I followed the tutorial as written but changed how I squared the HST.  I pulled out my Bloc-Loc 2.5″ HST ruler which made it a snap.

IMG_9003.jpeg

I laid out the blocks on my lightweight interfacing, but this time, I laid them out on point which meant I ended up using 57 background squares, 17 heart squares, and four HST to create the top.

IMG_9006.jpeg

Once it was sewn together, I loosely trimmed away the rugged edge. I trimmed just enough so that I could trim again once quilted. I pinned the top to a piece of Soft and Stable, ByAnnie’s foam interfacing, so that I could quilt it.

IMG_9010.jpeg

Once quilted, I sewed a back using an envelope closure method and VOILA — a cute lil’ pillow was born!

Tall Trees Block for Aurifil Thread

IMG_8577

What a fun year it’s been being on the Aurifil Design Team with the amazing company of so many people that I admire.  Each month a different designer created a block for a block-of-the-month quilt based on the color wheel.  I lucked out and got GREEN!!  I love green.  I love mixing greens of more yellow hues with blues and aquas.  I can’t hardly handle myself. 😉

Find the blog here to see my inspirations and to learn a little more about what makes me tick along with instructions for creating your own Tall Trees block:   https://auribuzz.wordpress.com/2017/11/15/aurifil-2017-november-designer-of-the-month-heather-givans/

Now, looking for the ruler I used?  These little geese finish at 1/2″ x 1″ – this is some heavy lifting if you do it alone; you might need a team lift that comes in the form of a teeny tiny BlocLoc ruler.   It looks like this.  Click on image to find.

Want to win an awesome Aurifil thread box??

Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

CorrespondenceQuilt_front.jpg

In just nine fat quarters, you’ll have the CUTEST little project to give to your paper loving quilty friend (and leftover fabrics to play with for yourself).

CorrespondenceQuilt-v3-EXTERIOR

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

Crimson Tate

Photo Eric Lubrick

My booth looked like this:

IMG_0008

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

IMG_1976

I will not fail in returning correspondence to you.  You took the time to write, I’ll get this done.  Promise.  And for everyone who wrote to me, I have included a sweeeeeet surprise in the envelope.

I have a new collection of fabric for Windham Fabrics that will be presented at the International Quilt Market in Houston, TX in late October.  Soon, I’ll announce an all call for help with that collection, too.  If you want to be notified of what we’re up to and what I need to create my booth, sign up for Crimson Tate’s electronic newsletter here.

I’m super jazzed that in Paper Obsessed I could combine my love of fabric and quilting with my love of doodling, mail, and embroidery.

Here’s a little photo essay of building the Correspondence Mini Quilt:

I’ve had so much fun embroidering with the Aurifloss by Aurifil Threads.  Some of you already have this kit and pattern because you purchased it through QuiltyBox where I was the guest artist for the month of June.  Wahooo!!!  I can’t wait to see your creations!

Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Sunday Edition with Karen McTavish !!!!

karenMcTIt’s easy like Sunday Morning.  Although, what Karen McTavish does isn’t easy.  Today’s Paper Obsessed blog is happening right here with the talented, energetic, lovely, and real Karen McTavish.  She quilted my improv Air Traffic Control Quilt that I fondly refer to as Aerodynamics.

Paper Air Plane Without Girls Flattened.jpgHere’s what Karen has to say:

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.
