Final Day Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Correspondence Mini Quilt for Mail Lovers + {GIVEAWAY}

WHAT?! The two week blog tour is over???!!! I can’t believe it.  Booooooo.  But holy moly!  What an amazing trip around the interwebs it has been.  I’m in awe of what people, friends, are making. From dresses, to quilts, to poufs, to pillows, to bags, to pencil cases, to pouches and everything inbetween, I love how everyone is making some stellar goods from Paper Obsessed.

In this last leg, I wanted to introduce you to the Correspondence Mini Quilt pattern that we wrote specifically for this collection.

CorrespondenceQuilt_front.jpg

In just nine fat quarters, you’ll have the CUTEST little project to give to your paper loving quilty friend (and leftover fabrics to play with for yourself).

CorrespondenceQuilt-v3-EXTERIOR

So I was inspired to create a line of fabric that would function as mail.  Remember way back when (ok, it was October) I had an all call for friends to send me mail for my booth at market?  The response looked like this:

Crimson Tate

My booth looked like this:

IMG_0008

I’m happy to report that I’m 73% the way through on making good on my promise of addressing everyone who sent me mail.  I’m ALMOST DONE!!! Yahoooo.  I’m so sorry it is taking me longer than expected.  But I guess this is the time that I should reveal that sometimes my Christmas cards don’t go out until June / July.  I remember one year I just drove around and put them in people’s mailboxes in the middle of summer.  You know, just to save on stamps or whatnot.  🙂

IMG_1976

I will not fail in returning correspondence to you.  You took the time to write, I’ll get this done.  Promise.  And for everyone who wrote to me, I have included a sweeeeeet surprise in the envelope.

I have a new collection of fabric for Windham Fabrics that will be presented at the International Quilt Market in Houston, TX in late October.  Soon, I’ll announce an all call for help with that collection, too.  If you want to be notified of what we’re up to and what I need to create my booth, sign up for Crimson Tate’s electronic newsletter here.

I’m super jazzed that in Paper Obsessed I could combine my love of fabric and quilting with my love of doodling, mail, and embroidery.

Here’s a little photo essay of building the Correspondence Mini Quilt:

I’ve had so much fun embroidering with the Aurifloss by Aurifil Threads.  Some of you already have this kit and pattern because you purchased it through QuiltyBox where I was the guest artist for the month of June.  Wahooo!!!  I can’t wait to see your creations!

Be sure to check out all the Crimson Tate patterns available.

Paper Obsessed Blog Tour :: Sunday Edition with Karen McTavish !!!!

karenMcTIt’s easy like Sunday Morning.  Although, what Karen McTavish does isn’t easy.  Today’s Paper Obsessed blog is happening right here with the talented, energetic, lovely, and real Karen McTavish.  She quilted my improv Air Traffic Control Quilt that I fondly refer to as Aerodynamics.

Paper Air Plane Without Girls Flattened.jpgHere’s what Karen has to say:

I loved working on the Aerodynamics quilt for a couple of reasons.  The quilt was original and unique – something fresh and new… I love being a part of new ideas. I wanted to make the paper airplanes really be the focus of the overall impact of the quilt, so two layers of Quilters Dream Batting was used for the quilt. Unfortunately, wool has a memory and sometimes shows fold lines. The process of quilting was to let the paper airplanes fly all over the quilt showing the path of its flight. I would draw the line directly on the quilt at the end of the paper airplane and hoped the line would run into another airplane. The quilting was really fun because I felt so much freedom. I felt Heather’s joy in making this quilt and tried to match that energy.

I want you to imagine what it’s like to get your quilt back in the mail after Karen McTavish has had it.  OMG.  It’s the best thing ever to open the box.

KarenMcTavishThis quilt was a major reason why Paper Obsessed exists.  I’ve wanted to make this quilt for the longest time, but couldn’t find the right fabrics to pull it off.

I used the notebook print, white on white airplanes, and ball point security envelope texture.

I’m so proud of this quilt and learned a lot in the process (through tears, frustration, and kerfuffles, and finally success).  It’s one of the projects I am most proud of in concept, design, fabric, and even down to the quilt pattern.  And I’m so super honored that Karen McTavish gets me and is willing to work so hard for my vision to shine through.

Thanks for peeking in on how Karen McTavish made my dreams come true.  I couldn’t ask for a better creative partner in crime.  She is so incredibly dear to me and I think we make a great team.

I don’t know how it is that I have not personally taken a photograph of Annie Unrein of Patterns By Annie, so this photograph I took at the Cactus King in Houston, Texas in 2014 will have to suffice.  See, Annie and I became FAST friends when I revealed that my first fabric collection was themed Succulents and she, like me, is a succulent lover from way back.  Annie is incredibly hard working and incredibly talented.  I’m honored to have her as a part of my squad.  Take a look in on what she did with Succulents and then head over to her blog to check out what she did with Paper Obsessed.  LOVE THAT GIRL!!!

AMY BUTLER’S BLOG TOUR: 10 STYLISH PROJECTS THAT CELEBRATE PATCHWORK

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 12.52.25 PM.png

Worlds are about to collide!  I’m the seventh stop (and maybe in seventh heaven) on Amy Butler’s Big-Old-Blog-Tour-Celebrating-Her-New-Book Piece Keeping. Even though I’ve got my own Paper Obsessed Blog Tour happening right now, I wanted to take a breather to show you what the Amy Butler has been up to.  Have you seen this book?

Amy Butler_Piece Keeping.jpg

It’s ridiculously cute and incredibly inspired.  Amy and I discussed Piece Keeping while we were at Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, UT.  Remember?  We made our Letters from Home quilt from her new fabric Eternal Sunshine for her booth.

IMG_7174

We chatted a lot about how the book was filled with all kinds of different fabrics, not just the beauties that Amy herself has designed.  As a fellow designer and artist, I agreed that it’s wonderful to pull inspiration from lots of different places.  Mixing and matching various substrates that have richness of color and amazing textures found in fabrics like cotton linens can be so rewarding.  I’m impressed that Amy’s new book pulls from a huge range of fabrics and textures.

One of my favorite projects in the book is the Stash Pouches project.  The book includes instructions and patterns for three sizes of pouches.  I landed on the large.

IMG_7543.jpgI wanted to incorporate some elements found in her inspiration, namely the leather pull and the metal zipper, so I headed to Diagon Alley to find my supplies.  Just kidding.  But I did go to a place that is pretty much where Harry Potter gets his supplies for Hogwarts.  If you’re remotely close to Indianapolis and have just a slight interest in working with leather, you need to go to Landwerlen Leather at 365 S Illinois Downtown Indy.

IMG_7502.jpg

The outside is so unassuming with the mailbox numbers glued to the window with its hand lettered and painted sign.  But inside…

…it’s a dream world. Established in 1908, you’ll find old cabinets filled full of leather sewing supplies.  They are a leather supply and shoe findings warehouse for the leather trades, small manufacturers, and hobbyists.  And it smells INCREDIBLE like leather.

I got my goods, felt inspired, and set off to make my Stash Pouch.  I chose to use Robert Kaufman’s Metallic Essex Linen with a piece of vintage plaid I’ve had in my stash forever.  This also seemed like a good time to pull out a little hunk of Heather Ross’s Far Far Away printed on lightweight cotton linen to use as the lining.

IMG_7520.jpg

Amy Butler made construction easy to follow and I truly appreciated that each of the pattern pieces told you exactly what to do as well as the book itself.  Piece Keeping celebrates patchwork, so of course, the flying goose is the star of this bag.  I mean, I love the flying geese. [Check out our Row by Row Experience block as evidence.]

IMG_7523 (1).jpg

My most favorite part of this bag, however, is the sweet pleats.  They make the entire project.

IMG_7527.jpg

I added a little bit of my Paper Obsessed stamp fabric to the interior, just a little embellishment. I knew I loved it and I figured Amy would like the succulents hidden inside.

IMG_7530.jpg

Here’s the view before I sewed it together.  Notice there’s a sneaky pocket inside, too.

IMG_7525.jpg

Want to peek in on a sample of the book with a sample of the instructions?  Check it out here.

Amy Butler, Chronicle Books, Free Spirit Fabric, and Renaissance Ribbons are all giving away amazing swag with this blog tour. Each stop provides one winner a copy of the book, a fat quarter bundle of Eternal Sunshine, and a slug of Amy Butler designed ribbons.  Leave a comment here and tell me what kind of sneaky treasure do you want to hide inside your Stash Pouch or tell me about the most amazing store you’ve ever been in that was unassuming from the outside but inside, there was total magic.  I’ll draw one commenter randomly July 22 at 8:00 AM.  Please make sure there is way to contact you (either through your link or by adding your email to the comment).  Thanks for playing along.  Don’t forget to find me in other avenues or visit me in the store at Crimson Tate!

UPPERCASE Magazine chats about Paper Obsessed :: GIVEAWAY + Janine is just plain cool.

Paper Obsessed BLOG TOUR continues today, July 15, with fellow Windham Fabrics designer Janine Vangool of UPPERCASE Magazine ::  http://uppercasemagazine.com/blog/

Janine.jpg

I’m pretty sure I scared Janine Vangool the first time I met her which was at QuiltCon West earlier this year. Now in retrospect, her fear of me was probably merited as I may or may not have put her photograph in the little pocket of my Letters from Home quilt.  She was nervous to say the least.

Janine in Pocket.jpg

You need to know Uppercase Magazine and the masterful and talented creative behind it.  Janine Vangool is a new and fellow Windham Fabrics designer and a completely generous human being.
