Sewing for a Cause :: Kangaroo Cuddlers for Riley NICU – Year Three!

We’re revisiting a project we’ve participated in for the past few years that spreads good-giving. We know you’ll love this one. We’ve partnered with one of our lovely customers and friend who is involved in Kangaroo Cuddlers which is a program that encourages skin to skin contact of mother and baby.  Read what the project coordinator has to say:

Kangaroo Care is hard to accomplish when your little one is in constant care in the NICU. A team of doctors devised a great program that provides opportunity for moms to wear a little kangaroo inside their clothing and when they aren’t able to be with their baby, the little kangaroo stays with the child. It reminds the mothers that this skin to skin contact is very important in early childhood as well as provides comfort and security for the baby as the swatch contains the mother’s calming smell.

FAQ:

Hey, Heather!  Do I have to use fleece?  Can’t I just use a bunch of scraps that I’ve got lying around?  I just upholstered my couch in burlap.  Wouldn’t these be so cute in burlap?

Dear Scrap Hoarder,

While we always want to encourage the use of fabric refuse, I want you to imagine the parent that receives this cuddler to wear under their clothing.  We want it to be as soft and beautiful as possible.  While using your old upholstery fabric might seem like a good idea, we’d like to stick to fleece.  Keep it simple, sister (and brother).

Hey, Heather!  I live far far away, like close to Mars, and have never been to your store except through the earthen world wide web.  I’d love to participate but I’m wondering if that’s ok?  Will you accept cuddlers from billions of miles away?

Dear Great Beyond,

Heck yes!  We get so tickled and excited when we receive mail from the great beyond.  If you live 100 miles away or in another galaxy, we’ll gladly take your cuddlers and give them to a family who can use them.

Hey, Heather!  I really want to win.  Can I turn in two, three, even four batches of cuddlers?  I mean.  I can’t be stopped.  My goal is 12,000 cuddlers this year.  I’m crazy competitive.

Dear Elite Cuddler Sewer,

Of course. Bring them to us in waves! It would help us greatly if you count those cuddlers and give us a running total each time you bring them to us, but we’ll start the clock and keep stats for you.  We’re totally into helping you train for the Olympic Kangaroo Games.

Hey, Heather!  I need to go get my car fixed, perm my hair, travel to Bolivia for a microfiche conference, build a house, do my taxes, rescue my forty-second miniature sloth, and complete a Rubix Cube before I can begin sewing these cuddlers for you.  What if I don’t make the deadline?  What happens?

Dear Over Committed List Maker,

You can always send and give us Kangaroo Cuddlers to be passed along to Riley Children’s Hospital NICU anytime.   You can do this year round and in fact, some customers do! Riley always needs them for new parents.  In order to receive the coupon and be eligible for the gift certificate, however, you’ll need to make the deadline of April 24.  Sounds like you’ve got a couple of minutes you can work on some cuddlers before then!  Good Luck!

Hey, Heather!  I, like you, love mail!  I want to mail these little duders to you.  What address should I put on this box?

Dear Precious Postal Fan,

Please send them to:

Please don’t forget to include your name, email address, mailing address, instagram handle, and your official count!

Thank you everyone for your generosity.  The awesome folks at Riley Hospital and those little babies thank you, too.

Indy Reads Bookshelf Quilt went to a good home.

Indy Reads Bookshelf Quilt went to a good home.

Ohhhhhh man! We are fresh on the heels of raffling off our Indy Quilts Books Bookshelf Quilt and just don’t know what to do with ourselves. The winner was drawn at the Alphabet Affair and it hit us that we weren’t quite ready for the quilt to go. What will we do with ourselves now that our beloved work is done for the year with IndyReads?

We’re starting a new project to spread the good-giving. We know you’ll love this one.
